PlayStation VR for developers

Sony’s Project Morpheus has now become PlayStation VR, a premium VR HMD built for gaming on the PlayStation platform.  They recently spoke at the Unite conference sponsored by Unity with the intent of orienting the product to the developer community.

I am impressed by their priorities.  The product was built with a focus on:

  • comfort
  • premium optics
  • reduced latency (strong implementation of reprojection which is similar to Time warp on an Oculus)
  • high quality binaural sound
  • integrating existing PS input controls

Given the fact that you are starting with a global install base of 20-25 million for PS 4, this product should be considered a strong target opportunity for the developer community.  Unity is a great platform for PS development and gives developers already familiar with Unity a strong advantage and ability to get to market.
