Is Cardboard making higher end hardware irrelevant?

Avid readers of this blog will know I am a fan of the entire VR eco-system and all growth in device, the install base, and underlying technology is good and healthy to me.

At the same time, it would be remiss to say I am not pulling for Cardboard on one level.  It is an ambitious effort to fully deomcratize the technology from the start, and bring VR to the world, through cheap and ubiquitous hardware.  The very spirit of the movement is beautiful, and has turned the normal evolution of breakthrough technology – start expensive and over the course of years get cheaper and cheaper- and I think it has done as much or more to build momentum for this current wave of VR than anyone else – Oculus included.

Great article in Technology Review here.

Great video covering the fundamentals of Cardboard and the early story about its development from the Google I/O 2014 conference is linked here.
